How to Take the Doors off Your Jeep Wrangler

How to Take the Doors off Your Jeep Wrangler

The Wrangler is probably the classic version of the Jeep format, boasting a pedigree stretching back to the military vehicles of WW2. But today's Wranglers are thoroughly modern vehicles, perfectly suited to everyday driving and off-road rough and tumble alike, combining power and comfort with rugged dependability.

The latest Jeep Wrangler models are packed with features, and one of the most interesting is the ability to remove the doors quickly and easily. Why on earth would you want to do this? There are at least four reasons:

  • If you're a dedicated off-road adventurer, removing the doors to create an open cabin adds an extra dimension of thrill to your experience. You'll feel closer to the ground, be in greater contact with nature, and enjoy a more adrenaline-filled drive.
  • Removing the doors makes the Wrangler lighter, so that it's easier to handle over difficult terrain.
  • A lighter Jeep also means reduced fuel consumption, letting you drive longer for better sessions on the trail.
  • Who needs a sun roof or cabriolet when you can go door-less? There's no better way to feel the fresh air as you explore the wide open wilderness, and going door-free is also a cool way to drive into town on hot summer days.

So, if you're now convinced that removing your Jeep Wrangler's doors - temporarily of course - is an experiment to try, here's how to do it in five easy steps which should take less than 20 minutes.

  1. First, roll all door windows fully down to protect the glass from damage when you remove and store the doors.
  2. Next, remove the footwell under the dashboard by undoing the clip which secures it in place. You can then disconnect any power cables feeding into the door, freeing it up for removal.
  3. Carefully lift the restraining door straps off their hooks.
  4. Remove the bolt from the door hinges. The door can now be slowly slid from its position and taken away from the vehicle. If you feel any resistance, check that all power cables have been removed and that the door straps haven't become tangled.
  5. Keep the doors safely in a dry place while you set out on your off-road exploits in the open air.

Importantly, before you put the doors back onto the Wrangler, lubricate the hinges with standard motor oil. This will help you to lock the doors back in place more easily without risking damage, and will also make it easier to remove the doors next time around.
